Why I Really Don’t Like “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town”

Like most people, I really love Christmas music. Most of it. The one exception is “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.”

Hate is a strong word, but I really don’t like that tune. Here’s why.

It all began when I was 3 or 4 years old, just beginning to figure out how the world works.  It’s an age when I had a lot of questions and didn’t really understand a lot of the answers.

When I would hear “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” on the radio or television at that age, I would think, well, if Santa Claus is coming to town with all those toys and goodies and everything, that must mean he’s not coming to our farm, 7 miles from town. To me it was just another damn perk those town kids were getting that we farm kids were not. I don’t really remember, but I must have taken a lot of things quite literally as a kid.

The good news is my therapist and I have been working on it, and I think by next Christmas I’ll be able to let it go.
