Rick & Mike

I’ve said it here before, but it’s worth repeating.  It takes a village… to make me look half decent on television.

Today I said goodbye to two people who have been making me look as good as possible on TV for a long time, Rick Abbott and Mike Deman.

Rick has been with WDAZ for something like seven years.  Most recently he’s been our “web guy.”  He’ll be doing a similar job for a Rochester, Minnesota television station.  Deadlines being what they are in television, Rick has pulled me through more tight spots than I care to remember–without so much as  breaking a sweat.

Mike has been with WDAZ almost as long as I have, close to thirty-five years.  If memory serves me correctly, Mike directed the vast majority of the nearly eight hundred Dullum File episodes that ran on WDAZ between 1995 and 2010.  As he has done for years at Channel 8, he’ll be directing the television broadcasts of UND hockey on Mid-Continent.  In his spare time, Mike was WDAZ’s operations manager.  (He had a title, anyway.)

On top of everything else, Rick and Mike are two of the nicest people I’ve ever met.

I would like to emphasize, neither Rick nor Mike has died.  They are simply moving on to other jobs.  Still, for me, it’s been a bittersweet day.

Thanks a lot, Terry! I will be hanging on every Facebook and blog post you write to keep up with everything in Grand Forks and Z.

    You’re one of the best!

  2. Mike says:

Thanks, Terry! I’ll miss reading ‘Sherman’s Lagoon’ with you every morning.

    Stay cool.

The average viewer may not know it, but WDAZ is losing two great guys today. People forget that there are more staffers working behind the scenes than in front of the camera. (No offense, Terry!) Mike & Rick were both dedicated to making sure that everything BESIDES the talent looked good – lighting, promotion, set design, etc. Best of luck to ém both!
