Trooper Of The Year

For the first time in awhile, the North Dakota Motor Carriers Association met in Grand Forks this week.

Lieutenant Governor Drew Wrigley spoke to the association last night, sounding very much like a candidate for something.

I was asked to emcee the association’s awards banquet.  My favorite award of the evening was for North Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper of the Year.  Unlike many other states, Highway Patrol Superintendent James Prochniak tells me, the patrol and the motor carriers have a very good relationship in North Dakota.

This year the Trooper of the Year award was given to Kyle Stern.  I met Kyle for the first time at the banquet last night.  But I’ve known about him for a long time.

He happens to live across the street in Hillsboro from my 90-year-old mother.   As a neighbor he has shown her many kindnesses including making sure her driveway is clear of snow in the winter, for which she and I are very, very grateful.

As far as I’m concerned the Motor Carriers Association couldn’t have made a finer pick for Trooper of the Year.
