So, let’s say you’re nationally-known comedian Bob Zany. You’ve just done a show in Sioux Falls in the dead of winter. Now, let’s say, it’s December 31 and you and your entourage have to drive from SF to Bismarck.
Now, let’s say, there’s a raging blizzard and you have to get off the highway at Brookings, South Dakota–or die!
Oh, no! What about the Bismarck gig? Screw it! You’re in Brookings and it’s New Year’s Eve!
Taking a room at the Days Inn, you notice dozens of other stranded drivers. Never one to let the masses go un-entertained and with visions of hundreds of dollars in un-spent cover charges dancing in your head, so is born “The Bob Zany Last Minute New Year’s Eve Extravaganza for Fellow Travelers.”
Quickly the Days Inn Pavilion Bar and Grill is booked. Fliers are printed and distributed to other hotels. Hats and horns are located.
It all has a wonderful Judy Garland, Mickey Rooney “Come on, kids, let’s put on a show” quality. Anyone who can get me to dress up like an elf for charity is not going to let a little thing like a Dakota blizzard stop him from doing his act on New Year’s Eve.
In the annals of show business certain nights will always be remembered:Â The Beatles at Shea Stadium, Frank at the Paramount and now, Bob Zany in Brookings.
