Andrea Gullickson

From Ovation Music:

Internationally acclaimed oboist and North Dakota native Andrea Gullickson has just released her third solo CD. The CD, released on the prestigious Delos label (http://www.delosmusic.com), is entitled “Oboe Celebrations: Music to Lift the Spirits and Set the Imagination Dancing.”

The CD presents six double oboe concertos and was recorded with fellow oboist Mark Weiger and the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra. Pieces include compositions by Vivaldi, Handel and Albinoni. Gullickson’s goal was to capture and share the sheer delight she and Weiger found in music-making.

Gullickson and Weiger were also the founding members of the world’s best known double reed ensemble, WiZARDS! WiZARDS! has released four previous CDs.

A native of Walhalla, North Dakota, Gullickson began playing oboe at age eight and participated in numerous North Dakota honor bands. She also attended the University of North Dakota.

She has performed throughout the United States, including solo performances on the Weill Recital Hall stage at Carnegie Hall, at the National Museum for Women in the Arts and the Library of Congress as well as across Europe, China and Australia, dazzling audiences and obtaining rave reviews. Critics have noted that her performances are marked by "passages of ghostly beauty played with transparent grace" (Santa Barbara Independent), and that "she plays with a beautiful sense of line and shape" (Journal of the International Double Reed Society) and a "big colorful sound that she uses to make clear-headed, decisive statements" (Milwaukee Journal Sentinal).

Gullickson remains closely tied to her North Dakota roots. Her most recent solo CD, “Down a River of Time,” also recorded with the Czech Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, features a picture of North Dakota’s beautiful Pembina River Gorge just outside of Walhalla on its cover.

Additionally, last October she performed with the Grand Forks Symphony.

“Oboe Celebrations” is certain to receive a great deal of attention in the world of classical music.
