The concert was wonderful last night. No, not Elton John and Billy Joel. Although they’re good, too. It was the final concert series of the Greater Grand Forks Symphony Orchestra’s centennial season.
It is also the last season with the GGSO for Music Director James Hannon and Concertmaster Eric Lawson. Jim has been a good friend to WDAZ News @5. He taught me everything I know about leading an orchestra and I borrowed a few bucks from Eric to buy a pizza during my stint as guest conductor last year. Both will be missed.
Guest artis Martin Storey is amazing. I didn’t want Tchaikosvky’s Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra to end. It did. But Martin needs to return to Grand Forks, and soon.
The second half of the program was Maher’s "Titan" Symphony No.1. I don’t think I’ve ever heard the symphony sound better. (The intermission was fun, too.) They’ll be doing it all again this afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Empire Arts Center.
All in all, a nice ending to a very nice 100th season.
