Pink Martini

Either they are a big band or, as they call themselves, a little orchestra. Either way, Pink Martini is awfully good.

Their new CD and especially its title track "Hey Eugene!" are unlike anything I can remember hearing.  It’s like Lori Line and her Pop Chamber Orchestra on acid–part retro, part I-don’t-know-what.  Ginny came home with a copy of it for me today as a reward for cleaning windows.  According to a New York Times article, it debuted last week at number one on’s bestseller list on the group’s own "Heinz" label.

Pink Martini (all twelve of them) were at Carneige Hall and on Letterman last week.  Friday (June 22) they’re in Winnipeg.  Saturday they’re in Minneapolis.  Sometimes I wish I lived in Winnipeg or Minneapolis.

You always have an interesting choice of music, Terry, so I thought perhaps I’d offer the name of another group you might like: Hot Club Sandwich, a group of guys who do a very good job with what has been tagged gypsy jazz.

I think they have a half-dozen albums out already, so it shouldn’t be difficult to sample if you haven’t alread discovered them.
