Lost Lobos

Los Lobos performed a wonderful concert at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks last night, despite a loss. The group arrived in North Dakota to close out the city’s 10th anniversary flood commeration, but their instruments did not. Los Lobos spent part of their day buying new equipment at Schmidt Music in Fargo. A source deep within the Alerus Center tells me their own guitars arrived only in time for the group to use them for their encore.

Mayor Doctor Mike Brown introduced the group last night in English. Then City Council president Hal Gershman introduced the group again in impecable (I guess) Spanish. Cute. Los Lobos is now off to Sweden, where the band has a big following, and three weeks of gigs there beginning tomorrow night.

By the way, where was last night’s audience? Yesterday was really the first truly beautiful Spring day here. Nevertheless!

Likewise, there are more than a few rib dinners left over from the free meal. I understand they’re going to be eating ribs at the mission today.

How was the show? They’re vintage instrument freaks…and one is a lefty. Wrong part of the world to be scramblin’. I’m guessing the tones were much better on the encore(s).

Does anyone know how many people the organizers were expecting -vs- how many showed?

Wish I could have been there.

Curious… I should have mentioned the show was amazing, even though it was obvious they were struggling with tuning problems throughout. Their’s is a mix of Tex-Mex, vintage rock, traditional Mexican music etc. Wonderful, wonderful stuff played by great, versatile musicians who seem to care much more about musicianship than showmanship. It’s like listening to one of the best garage bands (in the best sense of the phrase) in the world.

Had to work that day, hope the guys at the Mission enjoyed the ribs. I think it was a waste of money $46,000 for band, Charlie Daniels would have been better, since he was here shortly after flood. But alas another one Of Mayor Browns “Bronze Buffalo” scams. greenglass4.
