It may be the best idea I’ve heard all week. Fans of Jack Benny want the Post Office to put the late comedian’s likeness on the new 39 cent stamp when it’s issued in January.
For those too young to remember, Jack Benny claimed to be 39 years old all his life. The older he got, the funnier the running joke became.
Another part of the Benny character was his reknown cheapness. We can only guess what he would have had to say about another (two cent) postal rate increase.
The International Jack Benny Fan Club hopes to send 20,000 petition signatures to the Post Office’s Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee. You can add your name at the web site. The petition states in part that "We, the undersigned, support the issuance of a Jack Benny stamp to celebrate the legacy of laughter of one of the 20th century’s most legendary comedians." No doubt about that.
